5 Reasons to Visit Walcha

Walcha is halfway between Sydney and Brisbane, where the productive farmland of New England meets its stunning gorges and rivers of Oxley Wild Rivers National Park.

  1. Open Air Gallery

Over 55 permanent sculptures are dotted around this tiny country town, with gallery contributions from local, national and international artists. They add visual interest to the already very pretty streets and riverside walking track lined with European trees. Featuring a diverse range from a giant throne to a humpback whale, seeing them all is like a treasure hunt for adults.

  1. Oxley Wild Rivers National Park

While the name speaks otherwise, the real star of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park is the labyrinth of dramatic gorges and vertigo-inspiring cliffs. The icing on the cake is the many waterfalls, where the meandering rivers of the tableland plummet to the depths below. Walcha is the southern gateway to the park and also offers access at the Macleay Gorge Wilderness Area.

  1. Walcha Gallery of Art

A sophisticated regional art gallery, the Walcha Gallery of Art offers a contemporary space displaying quality works.  Located right in the heart of Walcha, you’ll no doubt fall in love with a great piece to add to your collection. On display you will find oils on canvas and paper, charcoals, sculpture, ceramics, porcelains and jewellery.

  1. Cheyenne Wilderness Retreat

Walcha is a farming town, and as a visitor you can get an authentic, hands-on experience of life on a working property at Cheyenne Wilderness Retreat. Located 40 minutes from the centre of town on the precipice of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, it’s a stunning location where kids big and small can help with the farm duties and learn about the property’s sustainable production processes, or simply relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of life on the land.

  1. Walcha Handmade

Walcha Handmade is a cooperative retail space selling the handmade wares of local artisans. From jewellery to preserves, clothing and homewares, you’ll find yourself a charming souvenir or a perfect gift and be supporting local makers at the same time. Walcha Handmade has a craft corner for kids and runs workshops and classes for adults.
