Getting to New England High Country

An ideal location

Situated within a day’s drive of Sydney and Brisbane, experiencing the wonderful New England High Country is easier than you may think.

New England High Country is the ideal location for a scenic long weekend or extended stay. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that it is well-equipped to cater for guests travelling by road, rail or air.

By Road

The capital heart of New England High Country, Armidale, is located halfway between Sydney and Brisbane, a 5 ½ hour drive to both.

Walcha is the southernmost town in New England High Country and is located 418km north of Sydney, accessed via the Pacific Highway, Bucketts Way and then Thunderbolts Way. The journey from here to the region’s northernmost town, Tenterfield, stretches 252km one way and makes for a truly enjoyable touring itinerary.

Tenterfield is a three-hour drive from both Brisbane, along the New England Highway, and Byron Bay, along the Bruxner Highway.

By Air

Numerous flights operate each day between Sydney and Armidale. Brisbane to Armidale flights are also available. Armidale Airport is located only six minutes from the city centre. Tamworth Airport also offers daily flights to and from Sydney and Brisbane.

By Rail

If you have more time on hand and want to take the scenic route to New England High Country, why not take the train? Transport NSW TrainLink operates a daily service between Sydney and Armidale that takes about eight hours, while buses operate from Armidale to Glen Innes, Inverell, Guyra and Tenterfield.
